Doc Wong's Hollister Dirt Riding
Clinic
It was a perfect day at Hollister. In the morning we did drills to improve our riding skills. Doc Wong is a skilled rider and patient teacher. In the afternoon six of us headed out on our own for a beautiful ride. One minor mishap on a black diamond trail yielded a burned leg (hot muffler). This injury was tended to by a very competent and friendly medical person from the park. One of the best parts of Doc's clinics is meeting new people with which to ride!

Weather: 65 degrees,
partly cloudy, no rain, not dusty, snow on the ground at higher
elevation
Conditions: Trails were
mostly dry with some muddy areas higher up in the trees. Found three
creek crossings.
Favorite trails: number 20
and 22. Another rider also recommended trail 30. Many nice two-way and
single-track trails.
Staging Area: Mill Valley
camp ground
Comments: stop at the
ranger station in Stonyford to get a trail map. Trail map sucks. Not all
numbered trails are documented. Distance from Walnut Creek to Maxwell
was 92 miles (680->80->505->5). Maxwell to Stonyford was 32 miles.
Riders today were Steve Pease and Roger Hubbard.

In addition to trails 20 and 22 trails 4, 6, 7 19 and 32 are impressive. We rode trail 28, a black diamond, and found it challenging but doable. As you go south in the park the trails become smaller and less traveled. Most of the blue trails are intermediate but some become very intermediate. We have decided there are blue trails and "mountain blue" trails. We rode a total of 52 miles in 5 1/2 hours. Weather was mid 80's and the trails have become much dryer. If we spaced out a little dust was not a big problem |

II have been to Clear creek many times and never really warmed up to the place. That all changed after riding it with Carl, an experienced Clear Creeker. There are so many cool single tracks, climb's, descents, technical trails.... very cool! I joined up with Carl and Don for an awesome day of riding. We rode 50 plus miles, it was my first outing this year and my first using my Revloc clutch. The clutch allowed me to navigate technical trails with apparent skill (skill I probably don't posses)... amazing. I could "brake slide" turns to tighten them up then turn the power on sliding out effortlessly (didn't really notice I was doing it until Carl pointed it out). Trails 145, 121 were great. There are many trails that are not on the map. The weather was perfect, 60's and sunny. On the ride to New Iberia we crested the mountain range and the whole valley opened up below, us encrusted in fog. Descending down into the cold fog on our way to New Iberia was right out of a horror movie. |
